The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to challenge particular calls from the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
