The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
