An individual who contaminated sweets with sedative and distributed them to children at a summer camp in Leicestershire has admitted sexual crimes against two children aged between nine and ten.
The defendant was taken into custody after eight children and an older person fell ill at the location in the summer month.
The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he was present at the courthouse on the end of the week.
Nevertheless, he disputed one of the sexual offences he was accused of, which was concerning a young boy.
The defendant was held in detention prior to a subsequent court date on 28 November.
'Sweet game'
Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, described the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.
She explained his victims were disadvantaged youngsters who were participating in a summer program which he managed.
The man played a "candy game" with the children, the prosecutor said, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and request they to consume candy "rapidly".
She told the court the man had conducted this practice with the young males "over an extended period", and minors had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.
She said the defendant had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had worries in July 2025.
The legal representative stated further: "This year his family member had worries about what was going on, for good reason.
"They resolved" to examine in the man's possessions."
Mrs Prior KC stated items including baby oil, ointment and syringes were found, and his family member notified the authorities about his worries.
She stated the man proceeded to play the "sweet game" with six children that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the following morning.
"Authorities" had not responded by that stage," she added.
The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, had stated that it was reviewing the police response of the events.
Mrs Prior stated the youngsters were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the police again.
She stated the man then engaged in the "candy game" in a room of five minors.
