Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
