European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
